Yeah, it is nice to know that we have made progress since then. But I still can't get over some of those wacky notions... I mean, really, bicycles? It just seems so ridiculous when you look at it from today's standpoint. |

It's a good sign when we look back on these things and feel ashamed. These days, no matter how bad it might seem, we really are living in the most 'equal' period in American history so far. If we keep it going, we'll reach true equality a lot sooner than you'd imagine. |

Another one is that if a woman worked, was wealthy, etc... when she married everything belonged to her husband, not her. The husband could spend HER money on mistresses/prostitutes. The technical role for women was to marry and reproduce... They took the phrase "obey your husband" too seriously (that phrase which is no longer around when saying your wedding vows). |

I am not sure if it is right or not, but my theory is that it's because you can't ride a bike side-saddle. But yeah... we were reading an excerpt from a book called City of Eros, which is specifically about prostitution in New York City and that part was mentioned. Apparently, head-covering or not, if a woman was outside on her own she was considered a whore. And this was before Victorian ideas set in. |

Originally posted by Valhalla I'm going to go on a whim and say the mentality now. Sure, there are awful things going on...but...we have more choices now. As a result of having more options available, women can venture outside without hats, ride bikes, and be good women all at the same time. I heard about the head covering thing, but bikes? O_o |

I don't know what's sadder, the mentality then or the mentality now. I personally think both suck.
I'll only be satisfied when men, women, races, species etc... will all be considered equal and it looks like I'm not going to be satisfied any time soon. |

Ah, I do remember hearing that.
Other such ideas included women who went out in public without a head-covering of any sort. Such a woman was practically considered "open for business." Personally I think it's all ridiculous, but then again I live in a time when a woman can talk about how many guys she's been with and most people wouldn't blink. |

So in class today we were discussing gender ideas in the 1800s and it was brought up that during that time period if a woman were to ride a bicycle she was considered a whore. Literally, a whore. What are your thoughts on this? |
