I'm seeing this more and more and I still don't understand what it is. The way I got here was I set secret levels to off just for kicks and then i chased Phoenix down and saw this place. What is 255?

And a slightly more serious answer, this is just an older gamer thing, really.

255 (FF in hex) is the biggest 8 bits number you'll find, so stuff on the NES would use it semi-frequently.
